Went to the south coast town of Eastbourne and cycled the whole of the Cuckoo Trail this time. It was an enjoyable 32 mile ride.

As hoped I went along the Forest Way starting at East Grinstead and going to Groombridge. I think I preferred this to the Cuckoo Trail because there were fewer people using it. For quite long stretches you were cycling in beautiful countryside without anyone disturbing you - lovely.

Disaster! I was on my favourite local ride, the Worth Way and was under 2 miles from where I had parked my car. Everything seemed normal, but suddenly SNAP! My chain broke! There was nothing I could do about this. Unable to walk far meant it was impossible to get back to my car, so for the first time I used my mobile phone to make an emergency call to my wife. She had to drive to where I had parked my car, swop cars and drive to where I was stranded. The handcycle was then loaded into the car, we went back to my wife's car and all was well. I was able to book my bike into Finch Cycles for repair later that week and I was then completely back on the road - phew!

Today I explored another route from my bicycling days - Downs Link. Sadly this was not the most successful ride. I did manage to go from Southwater to Rudgewick and back, but there are several stretches of the route that are really too rough for me. Even worse though are the steep sections, often with a loose gravel surface. Going up my drive wheel would just spin. I had to get off the bike and balancing against my walking stick, managed to pull the bike slowly up the slope. This is definitely crossed of my list of routes.

I have been searching to try and find somewhere else to go for a ride. Today I hit the jackpot! It took a 2 hour drive to get to Fowlmead Country Park near Deal in Kent, but it was worth it. They have a a national standard high specification tarmac road-race track which is 3.5 km (2.17 miles) long and 6 to 8 metres wide (19.5 to 26 feet). The park is the site of an old coal mine, the Betteshanger Colliery. The coal mine opened in 1927 and finally closed in 1989. It is now a marvelous nature reserve that is also able to host a wide range of leisure activities. Obviously the track was what I went to use and I spent just over 3 hours to clock up 31 miles. It was the best place I have ever been to for riding my handcycle. There are sometimes proper handcycle races held there which I would love to watch. I will definitely go back to Fowlmead soon!
